Louisville May 28 The Fayette county special grand jury adjourned after returning 36 indictments against about 50 people connected with investment companies. Indictments largely allege embezzlement with some joint and some separate charges.
Government forces clash with insurgents in China ending in a rout. Reported casualties exceed a thousand five hundred with forces claiming decisive victory and restored order.
The Southern rebel force was defeated by government troops at Shu Luh Sien with about 1500 killed or wounded. Ching Ting Pin was killed. rebels retreated from entrenched villages as Boxers gathered in Sheng-Tung.

The president sent to the senate the nomination of Charles C. Haupt to be United States attorney for the district of Minnesota. The notice appears in Whiteman's usual column.
Alonzo J. Whiteman, once a Minnesota political figure, was discharged after the appellate division ordered a new trial in a forgery case. The court noted evidence failed to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt, and the district attorney moved to withdraw the charge.
Pueblo Colorado reports flood damage from the Fountain river estimated at 300000 dollars. Railroads suffer most as washouts close through routes and bridges are destroyed. No confirmed deaths yet but some individuals are missing.
Herbert H. Matteson, former cashier at the First National Bank of Great Falls, pled guilty in federal court and received a 10 year penitentiary term. His shortage, caused by speculation, totaled $196,000.
