Nan Patterson leaves the Tombs a free woman after DA Jerome moves to discharge her on own recognizance following three murder trials. A crowd cheers as she exits with attorney Abraham Levy, then reunites with her sister and brother‑in‑law and plans to go to Washington.
Harrisburg May 13 two more victims died today from the Cleveland and Cincinnati express wreck raising the toll to twenty two. Samuel Shubert New York theatrical manager died this morning at the Commonwealth hotel surrounded by family and associates. Max Stettheimer New York also died at Harrisburg hospital this afternoon as the coroner and jury revisited the scene pending railroad inquiry into the disaster.
Daniel Costable, an Italian, was arrested by Policeman Hopkins while attempting to force a rear entrance to the White House at about midnight. He claimed a spirit told him his murdered wife was inside the White House. He was hatless and in a thin serge coat and locked up at the police station.
Louis Jd. Rens, a prominent Oconto agent for the McEachron company, disappeared during the day and was found dead by suicide in a barn south of the city. A 20 year veteran, he allegedly faced a hay shortage estimated around $80,000 with potential larger losses in other goods.
At Rosedale Kansas on May 18 Dorr Harrington of Sheboygan Wis was badly hurt when the Krisco Meteor struck five box cars in the railroad yards. Three other passengers and seven trainmen suffered various serious injuries in the Oklahoma and Texas limited disaster.
Manila reports the army transport Buford ran aground on May 11 while entering the harbor at Malabang Mindanao. Troops aboard were landed and the vessel is likely to be refloated and undamaged.
Chicago May 13 Three severe blows fell on the striking teamsters as the Team Owners Association declared the strike lost and urged immediate end. The association also accepted the resignation of secretary John F Driscoll, a key figure for the teamsters. The Miners Manufacturers Association then pledged support to the employers side, promising to make the association a permanent force.
Employers' Teaming association ran 1,900 wagons delivering citywide. Two nonunion drivers were assaulted with one gravely injured. Four thousand police and deputies protected wagons and freight houses. Employers plan to expand operations, bringing in white workers and sending home black workers as replacements. The shift aims to erase strike effects within a week.
Herbert H. Croker son of Richard Croker was found dead on a southbound Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe train between Kansas City and Newton Kansas during the day. He had died during the night evidently from the effects of some drug administered at the prior location.
Kansas City Missouri May 13 Charles Woodson a negro porter who accompanied Herbert Croker to the train was arrested and held for investigation Woodson says Croker was intoxicated and insisted on going to a hop joint He took him to a Chinese resort on Sixth street where they stayed about an hour before returning to the train
After Rear Admiral Nebogatoff arrived, the Chinese sea force is no longer a separate division. The fleet splits into three squadrons with Vice Admiral Voelkersam commanding battleships, Vice Admiral Enquist leading the heavy cruiser squadron, and Nebogatoff in charge of an information squadron of scouts and converted merchantmen.
An imperial proclamation in Tokio on May 13 announces martial law across Formosa and a state of siege. The measure was gazetted Saturday and takes effect immediately.
In Mankato Minnesota on May 43 Attorney Childs for the state finished his argument in the Koch murder case and L L Brown for the defense wrapped up his. Childs sharply arraigned Asa P Brooks the sole eye witness while Brown challenged the state’s case. The jury will hear the case today.
A powerful wind and hail storm struck Marlow Oklahoma on May 13 causing two serious injuries. Numerous businesses suffered heavy damage while light structures collapsed and residential property incurred substantial loss.
