Chicago May 15. A looming strike escalation threatens to spread as 35 000 union drivers may quit if no compromise is reached in the stalled capital labor dispute. The teamsters' joint council, representing 36 000 drivers, delays to let talks continue while the Chicago Team Owners' Association seeks a settlement and warns of a nationwide upheaval. The dispute widens with the Liverymen's association facing a possible 2 500 driver strike over boycott enforcement, risking funerals with nonunion escorts. Violent incidents include a fatal shooting linked to Cahill and two companions, and police probe slugging plots tied to the broader strike wave.
In Blue Earth county jail, Dr George R Koch awaits a jury verdict in the Gebhardt murder case. After thirty eight hours of deliberation the jurors show deadlock with two voting for conviction while others urge dissent. Judge Cray has urged instructions and a possible fresh trial if no agreement is reached.
Chicago May 15 Jessie Bartlett Davis renowned actress died at her home from heart disease brought on by nephritis. She fell ill Friday, faded after Saturday, and died Sunday evening. Davis rose to fame with the Bostonianas, began in Buttercup in Pinafore about fifteen years ago, left the company in 1901 for vaudeville, and last appeared in Erminie with the Francis Wilson company. She was 46 and married to Will J. Davis, a well known theatrical manager.
Snyder Oklahoma reports four more deaths from Wednesday night tornado injuries, including Miss Miz, Mr Paulson, John McCart and Miss Buzep, bringing the known dead to 117. Many others remain missing and several injured are in critical condition.
On Jolo island, two weeks of combat under General Leonard Wood left Moro chief Pala with 300 killed while American forces reported seven killed and nineteen wounded. Wood's detachments pressed Pala into a swamp and the uprising extended to later uprisings and related violence near British and Malayan areas.
Seven competing boats started from Port Mahon toward Toulon in a heavy storm. The Mercedes sank and was salvaged by rescuers. Camille and Malgre-Tout likewise were abandoned with crews saved. The Duke de Cases among the seven crewmen, Quand-Meme missing. Desaix and Kleber cruisers search the area.
Emporia Kansas May 16 Santa Fe train No 17 was ditched by wreckers a mile east of Emporia during the day. Six passengers were injured two fatally James Enger seventy nine of the soldiers home Leavenworth Nate Hendricks Roswell New Mexico are named as the fatally injured. This is the fourth attempt in the effort.
More than 2,000 union men escorted the coffin of George Piergge as it left his home for the railroad station in Chicago. The body traveled to Louisville for burial and sparked a labor demonstration with teamsters and organized labor in attendance. Piergge, a Rothschild driver, was killed by Special Deputy Sheriff Waldorf. a coroner's jury exonerated Waldorf.
A Boston woman claiming to be Carlotta wife of Maximilian and Austrian crown rightful heir fleeced about 160 Italian residents of the North End, taking some 40000 dollars. Victims included a duchess-hopeful wife and an organ grinder, who were promised titles and estates in return for their money.
Eva Dakin a concert hall singer shot and killed one of two men who attacked her during the day and attempted robbery. Detectives identified the slain man as Charles Bennett. Dakin is held for investigation while witnesses corroborate her account. Bennett's companion remains at large.
Chicago report states Matilda Buettgen aged 21 and Charles Henderson aged 17 drowned when a 20 foot yacht capsized at Morse avenue in Lake Michigan during the day. Edward Bodmer and Daniel Modester were rescued from the vessel.
