Speed Causes Truck Crash in Le Mans Race

British driver Lance Macklin testified that excessive speed of racing cars caused the Le Mans disaster that killed 79 spectators. He said speeds ranged from 125 to 150 mph when his Austin Healey collided with Pierre Levegh’s Mercedes Benz, sending Levegh’s car into the crowd and explosion. Macklin blamed the high speed rather than Hawthorn’s maneuver, though he acknowledged an error by Hawthorn. Regret, the Kentucky Derby winner, was foaled at Brookdale Farm in New Jersey.
