Washington runs through Operation Alert 1955 a three day mock attack drill that tests executive readiness as 15 000 officials including President Eisenhower flee the capital. Cabinet members are scattered on travel and emergency sites while Congress keeps business as usual.
Two siren alerts were sounded in Austin as a nationwide civil defense test proceeded, though the city remained inactive. A 11:10 a.m. three minute alert and 12:04 p.m. all-clear blast occurred with no city staff mobilization, as Minnesota was not scheduled for the mock bombing raids. City director Tom O'Brien and Mower County director Emil Schaffer reported orders to have staffs placed on alert, but no volunteers were summoned.

If he misses he loses his winnings but will receive a 1955 Cadillac as consolation.
Douglas Hooper felt watched while watching TV when a calf wandered into his living room in Van Nuys California. He fetched clothesline and ended up in a half mile chase with two police officers, cornering the animal in George Meighoir’s patio before it was taken to an animal shelter for the owner to claim.

Walter C Crenshaw a 47 year old beekeeper and service station operator was stung to death while transferring a swarm with his brother in law Max Crenshaw 26. After beekeepers attacked the men tried to kill the bees and Crenshaw collapsed. The incident prompted no further details on aftermath.

A two year old Desiree Mark died after being struck by a backing bakery truck in her parents' driveway in Excelsior. Dana Olson 25 Hopkins drove the truck. He now weighs 78 pounds and endures diabetes and three heart attacks. His mother Margaret O Leary and the family have exhausted funds on treatments as he clings to life and hope fades.
