Mock Attack Sparks Eisenhower Martial Law Talk

President Eisenhower rushed from the White House to the Defense Department emergency HQ for a NSC briefing after a large simulated atomic attack. A mock martial law declaration was issued to mobilize federal authority until Congress could reconvene and restore normal government operations.

Maritime unions call for immediate walkout on East Gulf coasts

The CIO National Maritime Union urged an instant work stoppage across 18 ports on the East and Gulf coasts with no contract in place. The action halted passenger ships including transatlantic liners, dry cargo vessels, and tankers, affecting NMU members and other licensed personnel as contracts expired at midnight. Spokesmen from the three allied unions were not available for comment as the pattern of the NMU strike spread.

Gas Fumes Fatal to Woman in Cabin

A St Paul Park woman Estelle Bird 45 died from carbon monoxide in a Hanging Ket tle Lake cabin last week. State Crime Bureau and Sheriff Hjalmar Hulin said the cause of the fumes is undetermined and an inquest may be set. Bird and a pet dog were found by her husband after a five day absence.

Quads Born One Still Alive in New Haven

Quadruplets were born to Mrs. Kenneth Barnes in New Haven at St. Raphael's Hospital. All four are boys born two months premature weighing about two pounds each. Two infants died seven hours after birth. another died early today. the remaining baby is in fair condition. Father Kenneth G. Barnes, an aircraft worker, called the deaths God’s will.

After one week of solicitation by several divisions, the St. Olaf Hospital Building Fund shows 24 percent of its $350000 goal with 83102 secured. Hospital Employes lead with 7545 of 7500 goal, Doctors report 41270 toward 50000, and Government and Education 6215 of 8000.

Youth Drown Attempt to Save Brother at Lake George

In Lake George Minnesota a 12 year old Dale Kahlstorf drowned while attempting to rescue his 9 year old brother Paul after the boy fell from a boat. Another youth Lyle Arvidson 13 alerted rescuers but both boys died. The pond lies about one mile from the family home.

15 Dead or Missing in Panair Crash Near Asuncion

A Brazilian airliner with 24 people on board crashed in heavy fog five miles from Asuncion. Fifteen were killed or unaccounted for, nine survivors reported. John Dowling of Time Magazine was among the 14 passengers. Rescue teams recovered six bodies and three crew members from the wreck near Cuatro Mojones as identifications proceeded. The flight was en route from London to Buenos Aires via Paris and other cities. Panair do Brasil, now connected to Pan American Airways, operates in Europe and Latin America.

Train Truck Crash Kills Driver Near Centerville Calif

A train and truck collided near Centerville California last night killing the truck driver Leo Murphy of Pasadena. The wreckage tore down alarm poles triggering a bank burglar alarm and scattering candy bars over a quarter mile area as police rushed to the scene.

Duluth Minnesota Axel Peterson aged 79 a former lumberjack appears set to return to the St. Louis County work farm to begin his 181st term since 1921 reflecting a long prosecuted public service or penalty loop over decades.

Du Pont Plant Blast Kills Three Workers in Wisconsin

In Barksdale Wisconsin three men Elmer Nelson 45 from Washburn Stanley Berg 44 Ashland and Russell Nelson 46 Bayfield were killed in a 30 by 30 foot mixing-house explosion at the E I Du Pont explosives plant. The victims were the only workers and the blast sent debris across Lake Superior Bay to Ashland.

Sidon Sinks After Torpedo Explosion at Portland Harbor

The Royal Navy submarine Sidon exploded in a torpedo propellant chamber and sank in 35 feet of water at Portland Harbor. Thirteen crew members, including three officers, were lost with seven others injured or rescued. Salvage ships moved in as eyewitnesses described the blast and bow setback while tugs and divers searched the wreck. The Sidon, launched in 1944, had been at Portland with sister submarines when the accident occurred.
