Rift Indicates Rift Among Subway Strike Leaders

NEW YORK An apparent rift has emerged among Motormen's Benevolent Association officials as the subway strike extends into its sixth day. Subways run at about 70 percent capacity with aid from non striking motormen and new workers. A bus strike deadline extended to January 1. USI drive nets over six hundred envelopes for charity

Herald boys collected more than 600 USI envelopes Friday, now turned over to USI for tabulation. Chairman Clarence Smith said many envelopes remain unprocessed with $53,371 counted so far, or 85.7 percent of the $62,352 goal. List of contributors includes R. R. Chambers, Msgr. Robert E. Jennings, Melvin Johnson, James Schulte, and many others.

Ozark Flight Might Stop at Austin If CAB Approves

Ozark Airlines would halt in the Austin area pending Civil Aeronautics Board approval of a new service linking Minneapolis-St Paul Davenport-Mol line. Mayor Baldy Hansen and Ozark president Laddie Hamilton indicate the Austin stop would occur if the route is approved, with service expected to start soon after approval.

Insufficient Funds Held Up Army Missile Development

Maj. Gen. John B. Medaris testified before the Senate Preparedness subcommittee that funding shortages delayed the Army 1,500 mile missile program and left the U S with little progress on a rocket engine rivaling Soviet power. He noted Army scientists offered an earth satellite two years ago but were rejected and cited two successful re entry tests of missile nose cones, previously undisclosed. Canfield May Get Home for Christmas

Patrolman Ward Canfield who was shot and run down by the O Kasick brothers four months ago may spend Christmas Day at home with his family. Doctors said he has been gaining strength and could be well enough to go home for the 15th wedding anniversary of the Canfields. He has undergone 11 operations and 97 blood transfusions since August 17, including amputation of his right leg below the knee. His weight rose from 110 pounds to 120 after dropping from 187 at wounding.

Thugs Take $1460 From Club Manager in Robbery

Minneapolis night club manager Harry W. Beell was robbed on his doorstep after returning from a bank. Two masked men seized $1,460 in change, $99 from his billfold, and left behind two smaller bags of change in his car as police investigated the Tuesday morning crime near the Flame Bar on Nicollet Avenue.

St Paul Woman Killed in Shootout. Man Held for Questioning

Mrs Louella Riley 23 was killed by a shotgun blast in the head Friday night in St Paul police held Ben Randle 47 for questioning. Detective Fred Buechner says Randle claimed accidental discharge following an argument witnessed by Randle's 7 year old son Levi. Both lived at 535 Fuller.

Beck Awaits Jury Verdict

Seattle seven men and five women deliberated seven hours over whether Dave Beck stole 1900 from the Teamsters union he heads. The 63 year old leader's fate rests with a Superior Court jury after arguments about union car sale proceeds and prior hearings before a Senate committee on labor racketeering. Defense counsel Burdell blasted the hearings as propaganda while asserting Beck should not be convicted for political leverage.

Brainerd Man, 27, Killed in Car Crash

Brainerd resident LeRoy Palmquist, 27, died Friday night when his car veered off Highway 218 about eight miles south of Brainerd. The crash occurred in Brainerd Minnesota. Police investigated the fatal wreck and listed Palmquist as the sole occupant.
