Secretary of State Dulles arrived in Paris to join Western alliance ministers for final NATO summit preparations. A key task is to soothe French anger over what Paris sees as British American pressure to use nuclear weapons within the alliance. Christian Pineau greeted Dulles at the airport.
President Eisenhower, 67, travels to Paris to lead the U S drive to revitalize NATO amid Soviet missile advances. He seeks Allied confidence in American leadership and greater cooperation while addressing French anger over U S and British nuclear plans in Europe.
The Army announced that more than half of the federalized Arkansas National Guardsmen in the Little Rock school crisis will be released next Wednesday. The force will drop from 950 to 432 as the situation remains stable.
A powerful windstorm collapsed a two story schoolhouse in Altofonte near Palermo at 9 30 am trapping 30 kindergarten children. Eleven died including headmistress Sister Giuseppina Giordano 42 and four were seriously injured. Five teaching sisters and others escaped.
Donald Gaedy seeks 600000 in damages from the City of Austin alleging pool negligence left him a quadriplegic from a July 20 1955 accident. The defense contends no city fault and jurors must weigh negligence contributory fault immunities and damages as evidence and lifeguards testify.
New York legislators called for an investigation of the Transit Authority amid the subway motormen strike. Assemblyman William Kummer urged removing two TA commissioners for alleged arrogant statements and sought a probe into collusive practices. At 70 percent normal service, the TA reported gradual return of nonstriking motormen and supervisory staff assisting operations.
Frank Depp a 28 year old Round Lake football coach charged with fatally stabbing a daughter and wounding another was ordered committed to a state mental hospital after a hearing determined his condition went completely out of control. The surviving daughter Teresa Ann 3 died or was seriously wounded. neighbors started a Dopp Christmas Fund to aid the family with community prayers and relief efforts.
A sharp earthquake shook Athens and surrounding countryside causing panic and cracks in old buildings. Electricity failed across a large area for about 20 minutes. The epicenter was placed by Athens Observatory about 30 miles northeast of Athens.
A $40,000 telephone system will be put into operation at Geo A Hormel & Co. Saturday after noon announced by Ralph Peterson manager of the Austin exchange. The modernization replaces a 1921 setup and includes new dialing equipment and three incoming trunk lines to improve service and reduce bad connections at the plant.
An explosion at Thiokol Chemical Corp plant in Elkton Maryland killed three employees and injured four, with one in critical condition. The blast damaged a building, created a large smoke plume, and occurred as 36 workers were on site along U.S. 40. The Orion rocket fuel and ignition system maker produced fuel used in the Farside Rocket.
An Air Force B47 bomber from Lincoln Nebraska crashed near the Duluth municipal airport shortly after noon today killing all three crew members. The six jet bomber dived from about 200 feet a half mile northeast of Air National Guard quarters after the pilot sent a May Day emergency report noting three engines were not functioning.
Sullivan Indiana police and the FBI recaptured two of four St. Cloud Reformatory escapees after a chase that began when a hitchhiker spotted a bloody sleeve. The trio’s stolen car crashed south of Carlisle, and officers detained Clausen and Bishop with minor injuries. The other two were captured in Chicago without resistance.

Austin Daily Herald carriers turned in over 200 USI envelopes on Thursday as donations rose to 52 972 toward a 62 352 goal. Names of donors will be published after processing. USI drive chairman Clarence Smith urged solicitors to turn in envelopes and donations. Herald carriers continue collecting this week with a five cent bonus per envelope and prizes for the top three carriers. Local 9 members voted to donate 25 to each of eight USI agencies.
