Bemidji and International Falls Hit Minus Twenty

January type temperatures chilled Minnesota as Bemidji and International Falls posted the coldest readings of the winter at 20 below zero. Grantsburg Wisconsin followed with 19 below. Other stations ranged from 20 above to eight below with no precipitation reported in the past 24 hours.

Couple Held in Childs Death in Michigan

In Muskegon Michigan a mother Crystal Smith 25 and her husband Ted Smith 27 were jailed for murder after admitting they secretly buried their 4 year old daughter Carol Ann Thompson in a back yard grave on November 20. They said they beat the child for being unmanageable and planned to flee to Lansing area as investigators closed in. The couple were arrested with two other daughters at a relative's home near Lansing.

Floods Strain Far West As Ohio Cold Wave Hits

Flood waters surge through western Nevada and north central California while Ohio cold air halts thaw. In Illinois a tornado damaged 90 to 100 homes near Greenville and Mt Olive killing two women and injuring about a dozen others. Floods force 5000 from homes in California and Nevada as rivers threaten levees.

Legion Auxiliary Conclave Hears Dr. Thomas Heart Research Leader

Mrs. A G Patterson of Austin introduced Dr Lewis Thomas at the Minnesota American Legion Auxiliary fall conference in Minneapolis. Thomas has been named head of the heart research program at the University of Minnesota, funded by state Legion chapter drives. Other attendees included Mrs Albert Skaran and several officers.

Army officer breakfast with convoy crew in Austin

Lt. Harry J. Schow of Detachment O 3903rd Radar Bomb Scoring unit had breakfast at home for the first time in two years as icy roads and a truck breakdown slowed a SAC convoy of 15 detachments en route from Omaha to Minneapolis. The unit tracks bomber streams for practice, with Capt. Ralph A. Woodcock commanding. Schow survived a 1944 B-24 crash and German prison camp, now serving as deputy. The convoy reached Austin late, then pressed toward Minneapolis after repairs.

U S Doubles Blood Quota for Red Cross

Washington The defense department orders the American Red Cross to double December blood collections to supply plasma for military use. Current output exceeds 90,000 pints monthly, with a near 100 percent December increase to stockpile plasma and serum albumin for 2100 civilian hospitals and the armed forces. Blood will be shipped daily from 35 regional centers to labs in Philadelphia San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Trailer Stove Blaze Causes Minor Truck Fire

Firemen answered a late night call to a charcoal stove in a semi trailer on Main street. The overheated stove ignited the trailer wall and caused slight damage to the truck securing the scene with no injuries reported.

Minnesota Jet Ace Rescued Off Korea

Ensign William F. Rau of Elmore Minnesota crash landed his Pant jet in the Japan sea off the Korean coast during a combat patrol. He was rescued uninjured by a helicopter within about two minutes. Rau has flown 24 combat missions including two dog fights with MiG 15s and has been recommended for the Air Medal.

Two Accidents Leave Fillmore Men Critical at Rochester

Two Fillmore county men injured in separate crashes December 1 remained in critical condition at St. Marys Hospital Rochester. Dr Francis Kelly 29 Spring Valley had a fractured skull after his car went off a county road near Wykoff. Norman Betsinger 24 Canton sustained head injuries and leg fractures when his car hit a semi trailer on Highway 52 near Harmony. Both were semi conscious.
