Chinese troops surge south in Korea forming a two front push toward Pyongyang. Gen. MacArthur warned of a critical situation as 500000 red troops commit to an undeclared war, with half already inside Korea and the city of Pyongyang under siege by UN forces and refugees fleeing south.
About 1500 people were evacuated from homes along the Bow River as an ice jam flood swamped Calgary Alberta. Evacuees stayed in fire stations hotels and private homes under police supervision as water rose over blocks in eastern districts. Basements and ground floors suffered most and authorities urged continued evacuation to prevent gas furnace flooding.
Prague court sentences nine Roman Catholic clerics including a bishop and two abbots for espionage and high treason tied to a Vatican plot. Sentences range from 10 years to life. Abbot Jan Opasek jailed for life with a 100000 crown fine. Bishop Stanislav Zela got 25 years and 100000 crowns. Abbot Stanislav Jarosi mek 20 years and 50000 crowns. All confessed, apologized, and agreed to appeal if chosen.
Chinese press reports say three American missionaries were arrested south of Canton on November 14 by Chinese Communists who claimed to seize a generator a radio set and seven pistols. The missioners ran a leprosarium near Sunwai operated by the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America. Two Maryknoll fathers were known to be there.
Norwood Minn. businessman Jake Krauss about 68 was killed in a grade crossing crash when his car collided with a Milwaukee Road passenger train five miles east of Norwood. He owned the Krauss Chemical Co.
Friday snow and sleet caused a series of auto accidents in Austin police reported. Several drivers including Frederick R. Baldwin and Otto Sukow were cited or fined after two three car crashes. Damages ranged from forty to four hundred dollars across downtown streets and intersections.
Major Michael C. Horgan of Fairmont Minnesota led United States Fifth Air Force jets in sweeping air strikes against North Korean Red troops and Chinese supply dumps. Pilots flew over 300 sorties and destroyed trains east of Sinanju and near Sinaiju, claiming more than 600 enemy casualties.
French Prime Minister Rene Pleven arrived in London with Foreign Minister Robert Schuman to confer with Prime Minister Attlee at Downing Street. Attlee plans to discuss the Korean crisis and Communist China with President Truman next week. Pleven’s cabinet won a 347-184 confidence vote, with only Communists and some Gaullists opposing.
A light plane en route from Chicago to Duluth crashed in heavy snow over timber near Ladysmith Wisconsin, killing pilot Nick Niemi 53 Duluth and passenger John D. Boren. The crash occurred about 8 pm Friday. both victims body found within 20 feet of wreckage after a two hour search. A CAA official planned to inspect the site from Wausau.
Roy Flower's parked car rolled downhill on Wilshire Boulevard Friday night. It struck a fireplug and bus stop benches, causing a geyser from a hydrant before being halted. Flower arrived to inspect the sedan with two for sale signs and quipped that it was still for sale cheaper than a half hour earlier as the crowd stayed quiet.

Mayor M G Rolfson will consult City Attorney R A Dunnette on return from a convention to decide if an investigation into the police department should be by the police commission or the council. Dunnette is due back tonight. The council also denied a junk dealer permit for 1812 E Oakland after a 47 signature protest and noted the property is not commercial.
Alderman Diederich cited upcoming street paving work and heavy city engineering workload as reasons to hire a second engineer. Council authorized City Engineer George Brown to solicit applications. Unanimously approved legal fees for Plunkett and Plunkett and for Dr. C L Sheedy in the Rhubee personal injuries case. The city argues it was obligated for on duty officers expenses as a defendant, though the action was dismissed. A railroad hearing is set for Jan 11 on flagman service suspension at Oak Street crossing on Sundays and holidays. Firemen seek state pension amendments to raise the maximum from 75 000 to 200 000 with continued one mill levy until 75 000 balance, to fund a more secure pension and insurance contributions.
Lloyd Shuck, 13, of 1120 S. River, was hospitalized Friday night after being struck by a hit and run motorist. St Olaf hospital attendants reported a fractured leg and good condition the next day. Witnesses said a car exited a driveway at 1007 S. River and fled without stopping. Lloyd was taken to hospital by city ambulance.
Anders Bendickson, 51, of Oakland, suffered a dislocated shoulder Friday after slipping on ice while heading to farm chores. He was taken to St. Olaf hospital and listed in good condition.

Mrs Stew art Case 33 pleaded innocent to a first degree murder charge tied to the death of John S Case 74 at a Rochester hotel on Nov 19. He died after two knife wounds. Judge Vernon S Gates will hear bond requests next week as trial date remains undecided.
Washington reports that Congress plans to authorize a new 17.85 billion dollar defense appropriation to raise total military spending for the year to about 42 billion. House Republicans and Democrats agree only that action is necessary despite tax increases. Most of the funds will go to the army navy air force and marine corps with a small remainder for other needs.

Washington announces Christmas furloughs for reservists ordered to report to U S army stations for extended active duty within the United States. Those assigned to overseas embarkation ports receive no break due to commitments to overseas commands and sailings. The holiday period runs from December 16 to January 1, with some continental departures postponed to January 2 to 5.
