Admitedly heated day as renowned admirals and a leading congressman attacked Secretary Johnson over his so called cut the Navy policy in Washington on October 12. They argued for stronger Atlantic and Pacific fleet funding and warned of strategic weakening if the plan proceeded.
The Senate voted 53 to 13 to reject President Truman’s nomination of Leland Olds to a third term on the Federal Power Commission. Texas Senator Connally and Lyndon Johnson joined opponents, citing Olds as anti-capitalist influenced by past communism articles. The session followed battles over Wallgren and Ilgenfritz, with Navy figures testifying on defense funding and carrier plans.
Henry W. Strickland twenty from Jackson Mississippi was found guilty of murder for beating fellow prisoner Robert C. Sperry forty eight in the Scurry County jail at Snyder last June twenty seven. The jury met at ten thirty p m and returned a five year sentence after two hours deliberation. Prosecutor Eldon Mahon urged a severe penalty but not death. The trial started Tuesday. The defense rested Wednesday without calling Strickland to testify.
Secretary of State Acheson denounced the Eastern German regime as controlled by Soviet masters and afraid to face the people’s verdict. Gloria Swanson the film star kissed by Vice President Barkley during her Washington visit on Wednesday. She announced a new ambassadorship for the motion picture industry while Barkley called her a fit choice. Swanson said she has appeared in 63 pictures and hopes to make a mother-daughter film with daughter Michele Farmer, 17, but not with her three grandchildren.
Two youths seized a police squad car in Chicago and robbed three filling stations within 22 minutes. The car was stolen from Park District Policeman George McCarthy who failed to notice it was missing until one robbery was reported.
Giddings hosts the Lee County Fair opening day with a historical cavalcade of over 300 participants at 7 p.m. after livestock and crop exhibitions. A Cortland New York housewife watched as a moved upright piano toppled from a loose board, crushing her two young sons Douglas Stebbin four and Roy Stebbin three to death. Coroner Dr. D B Glezen ruled accidental death. Neighbors lifted the piano and called medical help while authorities investigated the mishap in rural Rt 3 Cortland County. The children’s father worked nearby and the couple’s only other child, a one year old daughter, was unhurt.
General Omar Bradley told the American Forestry Association that Russia’s atomic explosion occurred sooner than expected but defense plans are well under way. He noted that Joint Chiefs estimates on when Russia would have bombs were surpassed and warned that Russia could launch an atomic attack with a small arsenal, urging careful armament decisions.

In Oslo on October 12 1949 the Nobel Committee announced Lord Boyd Orr former FAO director general won the Nobel Peace Prize for 1949. No prize for 1948. 1947 honors went to American Friends Service Committee and Friends Service Council.
Detectives Merle Wells and T S Weaver hid in an office suite after a burglary report at H J Gandolf Laboratories on the eighth floor of Capital National Bank Building. A woman later identified as Mrs Iris Bullard was charged with burglary and bond set at 1000 dollars after about 25 dollars and a split from a safe were recovered.

GUAM October 12 Eight crewmen escaped injury when a B29 made an emergency crash landing north of the Guam Air Force Base. The aircraft, piloted by Lieutenant George B. Herchenhahn of Abilene Texas, sustained heavy damage.
In Gloucester Massachusetts on Wednesday a barrel of herring bounced from a truck, scattering fish across Essex Street. A second truck skidded hitting a tree that crashed into a house roof. an auto also struck the skidding truck. No injuries reported. police seek the truck responsible for dropping fish on the highway.
Northern and Western coal operators renew a two year contract offer to John L. Lewis while he skips the resumption in White Sulphur Springs. The offer extends to April 1951 with stricter work clauses and no memorial periods. UMW Vice President Kennedy said talks move closer to a settlement.
Lake Success October 12 United States officials worked behind the scenes in the United Nations Assembly to defeat the Soviet peace pact plan and the demand for a bomb count. An eight point U N resolution affirms charter principles and flags human rights violations as the basis to challenge Moscow. Britain reportedly backs the American effort with other Western allies expected to line up.
The Senate passed a farm price support bill with a sliding parity scaled by controls, backing 90 percent for 1950 crops under limits while future levels may drop to 75 percent. It diverges from a House plan to keep 90 percent through 1950 for six basics and repeal the Aiken Law.
