New York October 11 1949 Stock market rose to new high ground for the year on a buying wave led by railroad and automobile shares. Gains ranged from a few cents to about three dollars a share with leaders hitting as much as four dollars. Expected early settlement of coal and steel strikes helped lift prices. Bertram to get street lights at under one dollar per month
Bertram in Burnet County will be the first of six Central Texas towns to receive Pedernales Electric Co-operative street lighting under one dollar monthly per light. A work order will be issued at Bertram High School ceremonies with Pedernales manager Martin J. Hyltin present. The system will add 26 lights for a town total of 32 at about 30 dollars monthly. Berle E. Bridges, a UT pre med student, sent a whiskey bottle into the Pacific on January 14 1946. After 20 months and 5100 miles a Japanese finder mailed a note and $5 offer to Bridges. The bottle crossed from Hawaii toward Kagoshima before being recovered in Japan.
