Schools' Pay Hike Measure Nears Senate Action
The emergency pay raise bill for higher education likely clears a Senate finance subcommittee this week and heads to the full Senate next week. About 800000 will fund the same six month increases as other state workers, with UT payroll averages around 6.2 percent and some colleges at 5 percent. An estimated 117000 more will be paid to UT faculty and staff for the rest of the period. The bill may set a 15 percent cap on increases for the first 3000 dollars of salary, accounting for prior raises since 1947.

City Credit Thought to Be Highest in Texas
Walter E. Seaholm, director of city utilities, told Optimists at the Austin Hotel that Austin has the highest credit rating of any Texas city, enabling a good, low interest rate. He warned revenue bonds will be needed to finance electric, water, and sewer extensions and noted two 20,000 kilowatt steam turbines costing about 512 million, arriving January 1950 and January 1951. Extensions will total about 1 million for water and 500 thousand for sewer. These bonds are a revenue pledge, not a lien against property.
