A federal jury convicts Mildred E Gillars known as Axis Sally on count ten for Nazi radio broadcasts during World War II. Jurors acquit on eight counts though the verdict carries possible death or prison term. Sentencing awaits Judge Curran with appeal planned by defense.
Travis County’s 32 steers averaged 491.2 cents per pound setting show records for grand champion lamb and pig. Buyers paid from 36 to 62 cents for steers with notable bids by Lem Scarbrough Foundation and H. W. Schwertner. Notable prices included 90 cents for a reserve steer and 3 per pound for the grand champion lamb. Proceeds support youth and charity causes.
A Brooklyn born government worker Judith Coplon and Russian engineer Valentin A Gubitchev were indicted on espionage charges by a special grand jury. Arraignment set for Friday. FBI said Coplon planned to transfer sensitive documents to Gubitchev found in her purse. One count accuses Coplon of transferring national defense information.
Camden dispatch reports Martin English of Moorestown N J paid $2 for each finger after thumbing a policeman. Patrolman Patrick Carry testified English insulted a pedestrian, prompting the judge to order a fine of $10 or two dollars per finger.
