Demand for rail and auto shares lifts the market on solid ground in New York. Blue-chip favorites led gains with many top active stocks rising about two points while some oils slipped slightly. Volume reached 1,780,000 shares as the index marked a four year high and trading stayed brisk.
New York wholesale wool prices eased amid profit taking and muted demand. Wool futures slipped 2.5 to 4.0 cents. tops and certificated spots also weakened. Chicago hogs and cattle softened, with prices for heavy hogs and steer-consigned weights down. calves, sheep, and lambs showed broad softness in late trading.
