Nation's Biggest Coaching School Began With 28 Texas Coaches
A rainy day in November 1930 saw 28 Texas high school coaches in a Houston hotel form what became the Texas High School Coaches Association. The group planned a coaching school for San Antonio, set up committees, and required 50 registrations to launch. The outfit grew into a major body with more than 1900 members, later expanding to include all high school coaches and changing its name. Charter members included Jimmie Kitts and others from Athens, Houston, Austin, Fort Worth, Freeport, and more, many later moving to college or administrative roles.
