City Answers Suit Challenging State Blue Laws

Co City files a general denial in 53rd District Court to seven grocery firms claim that state Sunday closing laws violate property rights and religious freedom. Police were told to halt enforcement until the suit is settled. trial not expected until October.

State cosmetology exams begin for Texas license seekers

More than 600 applicants will take the state cosmetology exams. Miss Ella Mae Murphy of the state board said tests start Tuesday at 8 am in the Stephen F. Austin Hotel with additional sessions on August 7 and 8 due to crowding. Negro beauticians test is set for Tuesday and Wednesday at 8 am at the Johnson and Randolph Beauty School. Results will be announced in about a week.

Zoning Board Reviews Four Applications Tuesday Night

The City Zoning Board of Adjustment will hear four petitions for reclassification of property including a full block commercial request at the West 1th and Baylor block. Applicants Minnie Leatherman Brown Biggs and Barr seek a B to C change on the northeast corner of West 1th and Baylor. Other hearings cover C-1 to C-2 at West Johanna and South Congress, C to C-2 at East First and Aransas, and B to C at West Fifth and Walsh.

Hit-Run Death Baffles Sheriff Near Del Valle

Sheriff Ernest Best said no clues were found in the hit and run death of Melvin Jones 40 of Onion Creek whose body was found on a farm road near Del Valle. Deputies L J Chapman and Perry Miller continue the investigation. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 3 pm at Del Valle Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Comanche.

Miss Johan Kallus of 1909 Rio Grande survived Nazi camps after losing family in Czechoslovakia. During a UT Austin picnic at Bastrop she lost 10 photographs of her murdered kin. A UT student later recovered the crumpled images, restoring a partial happiness to her long tragedy.
