William C. Ackerman praises coverage of the National Intercollegiate tennis championships held June 19 to 24 in the Austin American Statesman. He commends Fred Williams and Bill Lee for exceptional reporting and credits the University of Texas with outstanding tournament handling.
Jewel P. Lightfoot 77 former attorney general of Texas died in Fort Worth Friday. A nationally known Masonic leader he headed the Texas Masonic organization. Survived by widow three brothers two sisters three daughters Mrs I S Nelson Austin Miss Faye Lightfoot Chicago Mrs John T Gano Fort Worth one son H L Lightfoot Fort Worth and eight grandchildren. Interment will be in the state cemetery pending funeral arrangements.
City Manager Walter Seaholm urged Austin firemen to delay circulating petitions for pay raises while a city job evaluation survey proceeds. The AFL Austin Firefighters Association pressed ahead, seeking an ordinance for raises for firemen and police, with signatures equal to 25 percent of the last general election council candidate totals. The survey, led by Nelvin Ward, will rate over 1,700 municipal jobs to ensure pay equity and guide the 1951 budget, but Seaholm cautioned funding is not yet available.
Ashley of Llano Texas state senator and former district attorney Albert Ashley will be the honored guest at the Williamson County Old Settlers Association reunion in Round Rock Harrell Memorial Park. The 1950 session closes Saturday night with songs by the Stamps Quartet of Dallas and a closing address by Association President Frank Aten. Chaplain J L King gives benediction at 10 30 p m.
Central Texas construction shops gain a 15 day grace period as union sheet metal workers delay a strike. Local No. 67 in San Antonio reports the delay to Aug 1 amid ongoing talks with San Antonio and Austin contractors.

Contracts totaling 1.432 million dollars awarded for construction of a Galveston Medical Branch laboratory building to Knutson Construction Company. The project includes a new 80 000 volume library and housing for several departments. The board reconvenes Saturday at 9 30 am with remaining items to be considered.

Glen McLaughlin, director of the bureau of identification and records, spoke to Spital City Kiwanis about the bureau role and its efforts. He cited the Texas City explosion identifications where 56 of 410 victims remained unidentified after two months of joint work with Houston Galveston Port Arthur and Beaumont police. The Kiwanis voted to feed 100 Travis County 4-H Club members at their encampment at Austin Metropolitan Park.
Austin Public Schools superintendent Irby Carruth will speak at the Kiwanis Club luncheon Monday at noon. The event will be held at the Stephen F. Austin Hotel in Austin.
