Austin's Mayor Taylor Glass won the annual Soap Box Derby title in San Antonio defeating Houston Mayor Oscar Holcombe in the final. The event opened Texas derby activities with mayors from Fort Worth Dallas Corpus Christi and others competing along a 1420 yard Military Highway course. Holcombe had won the prior year and local officials watched as Glass led from start to finish.
Travis County voters have two days left to cast absentee ballots for the July 22 primary. County Clerk Emilie Limberg said voting closes Tuesday at 5 p m and 410 votes had been cast through Saturday, below the 1,900 total from two years ago, with about 600 expected by deadline.

George M. Dickerson of Dallas died when his boat capsized in rough waters at White Rock Lake on Sunday. The drowning occurred despite rescue attempts by bystanders and emergency crews.
An understrength B 26 bomber group operates from a Japanese base to disrupt North Korean communications and isolate ground troops.
