Calcasieu Lumber Company delays a final decision on rebuilding after a destructive fire. Fire caused quarter million dollars damage and took 12 hours to extinguish. A 1938 zoning rule may force fireproof rebuilding for the West First and Second Street block.
The US ambassador to China J Leighton Stuart will depart Nanking by air for Washington, arriving around Aug 8. He is traveling with John M Cabot US consul general Shanghai and Shanghai Vice Consul William M Olive and his wife. Olive was arrested by Communist police in Shanghai. Cabot is recalled to Washington for consultation.
The Chinese Nationalist troop transport Chiaa Jen was towed to Hong Kong four miles west of the city after striking a mine on Thursday.
Secretary of Defense Johnson backs creating a new Air Force academy akin to West Point. A. C. Stuart of Texarkana father of Mrs. George B. Butler of Austin died after a heart attack Sunday on a train approaching Des Moines Iowa. Stuart was president of the Two States Telephone Co Funeral services are pending in Texarkana. Survivors include the widow a son James Stuart and a granddaughter Mrs Claude Phillips all of Texarkana.
Fire at Bible Baptist Church started when baptism water was heated for a mass ceremony. Rev. E. E. Taylor put damage over 2000 with partial insurance. Pastor blamed birds nests blocking the flue from the hot water heater. Flames engulfed the roof interior and annex until firefighters contained the blaze.
Dr. Arthur Grollman, a Dallas Texas specialist, arrived in Panama to resume treatment of President Domingo Diaz who is seriously ill with a heart ailment. The medical team traveled by military aircraft to Panama City to provide care.
Dr J T Lawson of Bowie was elected president of the State Board of Medical Examiners in Fort Worth. Dr Harry L Klotz of Austin was re-elected vice president and Dr M H Crabb of Fort Worth re-elected secretary. The board meets every two years to reorganize and elect officers. No licensing action was taken Sunday as grading of examination papers was postponed until examinees receive basic science certificates. First basic science exams are tentatively set for Oct 21-22 in Austin.
A Sunday headon collision on a dirt road six miles southwest of Sterling City killed Harm Milton Sheppard 26, Bobby King 19, and Billy Hudson 19. Sheppard's 16-year-old wife was injured and rushed to San Angelo hospital in serious condition.
Paris July 31 National Assembly adjourned Sunday for an 11 week vacation. Premier Henri Queuille government weathered economic storms and faces more trouble upon reconvening Oct 18 to examine nationalized industries and the budget.
