The Texas House nears a final vote on a 27 million four year building plan to avoid a tax bill and a special session. Debate resumes Thursday as supporters seek 100 votes and a companion pre enabling bill advances.
George Royden Ogletree a 70 year old lumberman with firms in Austin and holdings in California and East Texas died at Seton Hospital. He moved from Georgia to Texas in 1900s and built Ogletree Lumber Company in Austin after 1945. Funeral planned at First Baptist Church with Weed-Corley in charge. survivors include widow Londa Pickett Ogletree and five grandchildren.
Washington reports labor foes of the Taft Hartley Act conceded Wednesday in their bid to repeal the law this year. The Senate rushed toward a final vote on Taft's program as House action remained blocked. Labor leaders prefer keeping the act intact and using it as a 1950 campaign issue, while Taft argues for selective changes to preserve essentials.
The Community Chest of Austin and Travis County reorganizes to enlarge its board to about 100 directors and extend activities to Travis County. The move aims to boost local fundraising with a July completion target and requires member groups to meet new quotas and governance rules.

A new plan to curb juvenile delinquency received final legislative approval. It creates a state Youth Development Council to coordinate youth programs and fund local services, with a diagnostic center to assess delinquency causes. The council will oversee three training schools and has a two year 137000 dollar annual budget.
