Attempt to kidnap Santa Anna near Velasco scene

The New Orleans Bee reports an American schooner Passiac loaded with provisions sailed for Texas under disguise of trade to seize Santa Anna. Authorities seized the schooner and jailed those involved while the American Minister Pointsett left Velasco for Galveston. The Julius Cesar dispatches note a Texian schooner Invincible in pursuit of Venus about 30 miles from the 8 W. Bar, likely a prize.

Bank of Milledgeville reorganizes and sets terms

The Georgia Journal reports the Bank of Milledgeville is fully organized and accepting deposits and exchanges. Discounting is planned with term limits from 60 days to 12 months after October, with 7 to 8 percent rates. Directors and officers are listed along with substantial local stockholders.

Gouverneur ousted as postmaster and abolition tensions rise

The Charleston Mercury notes Gouverneur, longtime New York postmaster, was removed by the Van Buren faction amid abolitionist tensions. It cites rumors of mail changes and noncommittal resolutions. The Montgomery Journal reports Creeks offering 12 months service to the U S and a planned Florida campaign led by Captain Lane. Also New Cotton from Richard Singleton sold at 204 cents in Columbia.

New Orleans market notes arrivals and stock figures with 250 bales in, 4127 bales cleared, leaving 4586 on hand including on shipboard. Little sales and no inquiry for remaining lots. Two bales of new crop reached. potential arrivals before October. Sugar prices hold at 10 to 11 cents, demand dull. Havana sugar steadier with some sales. Molasses scarce. retail price about 40 to 43 cents per gallon.
