The ad rates list six dollar annual options payable in advance or six dollars at year end for weekly papers. advertisements are inserted at 624 cents per square with varying frequencies. Notices for land or enslaved people sales must appear 60 days before sale. personal property and debtor notices require 40 days. four months for leave to sell land or enslaved people.
A Charleston styled notice from Augusta dated March 16 1836 asks debtors to pay promptly to aid the paper during its absence in Florida. Gen Pope and staff of Oglethorpe travel to Florida, while the editor criticizes a child history book depicting slavery and whips, urging Southern readers to inspect school books.
The Lynchburg Journal condemns a recent resolution as dangerous and outrageous. It questions Congress power over slavery in states and warns against provoking abolitionists. The piece pleads for South unity and fair, dispassionate discussion while criticizing Union presses for inciting division.
A detailed 1836 report covers the Richmond Blues celebration at Four Danning Florida with a Washington birthday oration by Lieut. Stannes, a processional parade including U.S. Army officers, a camp dinner, and numerous toasts praising Washington, the Richmond Blues, and relations with Georgia volunteers.
