War Department dispatch from Maj. Gen. Scott on Florida frontier
The Globe prints Major General Winfield Scott’s full letter from May 11 1856 from St Augustine. He relates delays in delivering reports from Brig. Gen Clinch and updates on Indian depredations near Fort Drane and along the Alachua frontier. He details troop reinforcements at Fort King, mounting regular and volunteer forces, and attempts to secure the western flank with mounted companies and a patrol ascent of the St Johns to deter raids. He criticizes Maj Read for not reporting and argues for a substantial regular force to finish the Seminole war, expressing personal illness but intent to return to balance the campaign.
