MR PINCKNEY'S REPORT argues that abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia would violate the public faith of Maryland and Virginia, threaten the Union, and provoke widespread conflict in slaveholding states. The committee urges no federal action on slavery in the District and calls for tabling all abolition petitions to preserve national harmony.
