A fragmentary piece reflects on elections and reporting. It notes general election mockery, then mentions selecting a dated account of William Cobbett as a candidate and his speech, signaling its potential instructive value to readers.
In Winchester a county meeting chose two knights of Hampshire. Messrs Chute and Heathcote were elected after Cobbett's long attack on other candidates and public spending. The proceedings featured sharp exchanges, a disputed certificate, and charges about parliamentary reform, ending with Chute and Heathcote declared elected.
Dated account describes a conclave between General Smyth and General Porter on Grand Island following prior arrangements. They met at Dayton's tavern and crossed the river with friends and surgeons. Both sides maintained coolness and exchanged shots that had no effect before Smyth’s second pressed Porter to accept the charge of cowardice.
A detailed account covers General Smyth's November to December operations including a 4500-strong force, naval preparations at Black Rock, crossing plans for Canada, and a night attack against batteries. It describes dispersal of the enemy, casualties among sailors, spiking of guns, and debates over embarkation timing and landing positions.
