The National Intelligencer reports Michigan legislators chose Lucius Lyon and John Norvell as Senators. Lyon was unanimously nominated by both houses, Norvell won in joint ballot 32 to 28 over John Biddle. Both men are described as friends of the current administration.
The Montezuma arrived from Vera Cruz carrying Mexico updates through the 1st inclusive. The New York Commercial Advertiser reports tidings of recent movements in Texas and related developments.
News from Vera Cruz reports five hundred commissions for privateers to be issued as needed. The archbishop and bishop of Puebla pledged a million dollars to fund the war. A 2000 infantry division gathered at Metamoras, 300 cavalry under Gen. Montezuma moved toward Monteury in Texas, with Gen. Santa Anna possibly taking command. The new constitution was adopted and proclaimed amid opposition.
Mississippi reports show Van Buren candidate Runnuts defeated by Judge Cuames Lynen, with Anti Van Buren Davin Dickson and F H Crathorne winning Congress seats. Argus notes Clinton info that near two thirds of Legislature favor White for Presidency. Cuantes C Marsox, a State Rights man from South Carolina, elected State Treasurer. Maxxory wins Auditor of Public Accounts.
The Cassville Pioneer reports on the arrest of John Ross and a Northern gentleman named Payne by the Georgia Guard. It notes no evidence they incited Indians or slaves to hostilities, confirms Ross’s release, and characterizes the guard as robbers in disguise. Payne, author of Sweet Home, faces potential passport issues from Judge Lynch.
News notes a sharp fall in river water levels over three to four days, jeopardizing steam navigation. last evening water remained too low for safe access and rain is not forecast soon. A fire at a corner South and West Broad streets building, once a stable, was extinguished with no injuries. The incident is blamed on arson. Also cited are recent newspaper disruptions in Texas and travel observations of The Aurora appearing in Portland and Montrose.
Cotton prices in Augusta continue to fall with the largest lot yesterday selling at 14 cents per pound. Freight rates see Savannah at 1 dollar per bale and Charleston at 4 cents per pound.
