The Making of Cement and Raw Material Use
The United States geological survey notes cement production needs 450 pounds of limestone and 150 pounds of clay or shale per barrel. A 1000 barrel daily plant uses about 66 000 tons limestone and 22 000 tons clay yearly, and would require roughly 1 000 000 cubic feet limestone and 250 000 cubic feet shale annually for a 1 000 000 barrel plant. It cautions plants should secure at least twenty years of supply, implying a 1 690 barrel plant needs about 20 000 000 cubic feet limestone and 5 000 000 cubic feet clay or shale on site.
