Palmer the Nominee for President and Buckner for Vice
Two white haired veterans of the late war, John M. Palmer of Illinois and Simon Buckner of Kentucky, were nominated by the National Democratic convention for president and vice president. The platform repudiates Chicago doctrines, endorses Cleveland, gold standard, tariff for revenue, liberal shipping laws, currency reform, civil service, and economy. Palmer accepted after the roll call showed overwhelming support. Buckner’s nomination followed. Henry Watterson said he was not a candidate. Campaign setup includes a nine-member executive committee led by W. D. Bynum, with headquarters likely in Chicago and notices sent Sept. 15.
