Cass County Fair Highlights Largest Horse Show Yet

The Cass County Fair opened amid favorable weather and bright prospects for a successful sale. Entries swelled the horse show, cattle displays featured wide holdings from Julian Phelps and others, and premiums were still unsettled. A high dive act drew attention along with a mule race where Thomas Shannon’s mule suffered a fall, and James Tucker’s mule won first prize. The prettiest baby was Columbus Pratt’s daughter, with Irene Highly a runner up.

Sunday school picnic brings townships together in Squires Grove

The annual picnic of Pymosa, Brighton and Washington townships drew a cool crowd despite rain. Five schools participated with two notable addresses by Rev. Martin of Marne and Rev. Mother of Harlan. Officers elected at the business meeting include J. W. Butler as president for the 15th year, J. D. Peterson secretary, and A. C. Fulton treasurer. Rock Island playing cards offered at 10 cents a pack with optional engraving rules.

Li Hung Chang at West Point visit aboard Dolphin

Li Hung Chang arrived at West Point aboard the Dolphin to inspect the academy but heavy rain kept him from landing. On the trip up the river Colonel Fred Grant highlighted points of interest including the sugar refinery near Williamsburg and the Brooklyn Bridge while the ambassador quizzed on railroads profits and bridge construction. He praised American engineering and asked about costs and payback of the bridge.
