Dean Richmond Sinks With 18 on Board in Lake Erie
Eighteen crew members perished when the propeller Dean Richmond foundered off Van Buren point after a northwestern gale on Lake Erie. Captain Stoddard and Captain Boysen are widowed. Frank Hilton, a key breadwinner, left a mother and sister. The vessel carried flour and was owned by Port Huron interests, fully insured, and built in 1864. Captain Packer of the Minnehaha, the sole survivor from the other wreck, recounted the disaster near Manistee.
