The U S Senate adjourned after a marathon session over the repeal bill and free coinage of silver. Frequent roll calls, threats to publish absentees, and a near quorum collapse filled the night as Senators Voorhees, Stewart, and Martin clashed with Aldrich and Quay. Spectators overflowed galleries while officers hunted missing members to complete a quorum.
About 4:20 pm on October 11 a Pennsylvania Railroad No 8 derailed after entering an open switch west of One Hundred Nineteenth Street Crossing. The engine and mail car plus two vestibule cars left the track. Two crewmembers, engineer Henry Warner and fireman John Christie, were killed. Three others, including the conductor, were injured.
