A Transport's Escapes and Filipino Assault at Sea
The transport Centennial arrived in San Francisco after a perilous Manila voyage. It faced near-typhoons, a reef near Manila, and attacks by Filipinos at the wharf. A sailor was killed during the hawser parting and an artemaster stabbed a colored man. One galley steward, Charles Wilson, remained in irons after aiding the ship. The crew saved the vessel during a violent incident with looters who swarmed the wharf, seizing gear and causing chaos before retreat.
