McAdoo backs marine measure to buy German ships
Washington. Secretary McAdoo told the house merchant marine committee that the United States has the right to buy ships from German companies for neutral uses. He endorsed the Alexander bill creating a 10 million dollar corporation to buy and operate ships in foreign trade, with government majority stock. He said private capital might not attract lines to operate at a loss and explained neutrality protections and payment to private owners. A letter from William M. Coates opposed the bill and urged direct subsidy for merchant marine build up.
