In Macon delegates endure a deadlocked Democratic convention after hours of ballots for a short term U S Senate nomination. Hardwick leads several ballots with Felder and Slaton trailing as Hutchens fades. Final tallies show Slaton and Hardwick exchanging leads while Felder holds key influence.
In Macon on September 2 the twelfth ballot showed Felder 93, Hardwick 164, Slaton 110, Hutchens 4 as Governor Slaton and Congressman Hardwick moved forward. Disorder erupted over a five minute address, with speakers ruled out of order, cheers for Felder, and delegates shouting as the roll and motions faced obstruction.
