Daniel A. Tompkins co founder of The Charlotte Observer and a longtime industrial figure in the Carolinas died at his summer home in Montreal New York at 62 after a period of illness. Born in Edgefield South Carolina October 12 1852 he trained at the University of South Carolina and Rensselaer and helped develop Charlotte as a manufacturing center. He built cotton seed oil mills and influenced over a hundred cotton mills. He served on President McKinley industrial commission and as director of Equitable Life Assurance.
