Between twelve and fifteen thousand Disciples of Christ from across the country will gather in Atlanta for the annual convention. Opening exercises are set for tonight in the auditorium with many distinguished guests expected and visitors being shown every courtesy.
A morning schedule lists a 10 a m Christian Woman's Board meeting and a Missions board session at First Christian Church. The Foreign Christian Missionary Society meets there as well, with an opening convention session at the auditorium at 7 p m including addresses by Mayor Woodward, Governor Slaton, and Dr F G Speer.
The international convention of the Disciples of Christ gathers in Atlanta as 12 000 to 15 000 delegates arrive from across the United States. Ninteen special trains bring members to the city, where hosts assign them to hotels and 4 000 local lodging spaces. The first session begins at 7 p m in the Auditorium with welcomes from Governor Sla ton and Mayor Woodward. Eli M Bell of Drake University presides and speaks on foreign missions alongside Graham Frank and Dr Robert B Sheer.
After a council finance committee meeting Chairman W. G. Humphrey stated the $11,812 for schools will remain in the October apportionment and is not in jeopardy. He argues the school funds are essential and would be a blow to education if cut. He plans to urge recalling about $15,900 in street funds to bolster the school department’s teaching facilities, including extra grammar and high school instructors.
Charles F Murphy of Tammany Hall offered and the New York county Democratic committee adopted a resolution endorsing President Wilson and his administration. It praised Washington’s admonition on entangling alliances and pledged support for Martin Glynn for governor. Dahiman Declares for Wilson. Omaha.
The San Antonio grand jury began an inquiry into the disappearance of Elois Nelms Dennis and her sister Beatrice Nelms from Atlanta. Fifteen witnesses testified including Mrs J W Nelms and Marshall Nelms. Victor Be Innes and his wife of Eugene Oregon are jailed on warrants alleging murder and accessory in the case. Habeas corpus hearings are set for tomorrow.
Dr. David Starr Jordan, chancellor of Stanford University and peace advocate, returned to campus from Europe and called the European conflict “the most abominable thing that has happened in civilization.” He believed the war would end through U.S. good offices, though peace committees’ work is premature.
A 17 year old boy, Millard Williams, admits stealing up to seventy five cars this year in the county and city. Police Lt Cheshire and FB Haynie captured him after a daybreak motorcycle pursuit. A second youth Worley Welmont is in custody linked to Williams raids. Police recover a car and search for two other accomplices. The motive cited is joyriding. many cars were abandoned after theft. Police say Williams and his parents live at Sandy Springs.
Washington October 6 the Democratic Senate caucus on the war revenue bill recessed after deciding to place the bulk of the emergency revenue on beer and whisky yielding about 50 million annually. They struck gasoline and auto taxes and cut the bank capital levy while proposing stamp taxes on medicines cosmetics and chewing gum to raise revenue.
A Munich dispatch reports Prince Francis, fourth son of the Bavarian king, wounded in the left thigh during a battle. He underwent surgery in a hospital and blood poisoning was feared briefly, but he is now out of danger.
London reports that after sixty three days of the European war there is no decisive land or sea conflict. Berlin and London show no progress or reverses while Petrograd claims continued Russian progress. Paris issues a cryptic update on the Western battle line with hints of varied operations.
Dispatches from Antwerp report the military governor urged residents to evacuate as bombardment is imminent. The message notes the town will resist to the extreme while the Great Eastern Railway suspend s Antwerp service. Churchill seen in Antwerp as German actions unfold.
London dispatch says Warsaw becomes a completely dry city after a Reuters report that sale of spirits and wine is prohibited even in first class restaurants, hotels and clubs. The measure marks a drastic shift in the capital’s social and commercial scene.
