Alabama constitutional convention debates race and suffrage
In Montgomery on May 30, delegates debated plans to disenfranchise African descent voters and shift university governance. Earle Pettus proposed an ordinance barring voting by people of African descent at all levels. Education reform dominated discussions with proposals to divide school funds by race, create new boards, and adjust funding for Auburn and the state university. Other items included judiciary reforms, railroad regulation, and a proposed suffrage scheme centered on a poll tax and grandfather clause, as the convention continued wrestling with constitutional changes.

In South Carolina the conservative bloc sees Senator Tillman defeating Senator McLaurin in the special primary.
