Memphis hosts United Confederate Veterans reunion as Dallas and Louisville jostle for next year’s meeting. Georgia toned votes, chief Joyner’s drum corps leads flower parade, and Atlanta delegates praised. Memphis Tenn May 99 With the year’s work completed the Confederate Veterans adjourned the reunion after a stormy evening forecast. Dallas won the bid to host next year’s gathering, General John B Gorton was re elected commander amid cheers, and plans for the Richmond Battle Abbey were approved with cornerstone to be laid within ninety days. A grand parade and cornerstone ceremony are set for tomorrow alongside numerous receptions. Adjutant General Moorman was re elected for a three year term.
General Gordon complained about noise at a Confederate hall convention session. Delegates from 1,383 camps totaled 228 delegates, Texas leading with 120 camps and 461 delegates. He asked city officials to curb disturbances so business could proceed, as resolutions were reviewed and a memorial to General Robert E Lee discussed.
Atlanta faces a track split on Cherokee avenue between Georgia avenue and Ormond street as the Atlanta Rapid Transit Company and the Atlanta Railway and Power Company contend for the inside line in front of the park. A special council meeting heard speeches from company and city officials, with proposals to place tracks on alternate sides and to run trains to the park on one track and back on the other.
Knoxville reports 122 machinists at the Southern Railway shops walk out including apprentices and helpers. Similar action at Salisbury with about 100 workers. Union leaders state nine hour day and a 12 1/2 percent wage rise as core demands. Gannon says only Charleston workers had stopped and notes plans to issue notices to shop doors. Ongoing coordination with the International Association of Machinists and potential nationwide impact noted.
The Bradner branch of Mechanics Bank in Fostoria was wrecked by robbers at about 1:10 am. They used two charges of high explosives to blow the outer vault door and the strong box, stealing about $4,000 before escaping on a Hocking Valley hand car. The blast blew out all glass and cracked walls, with an earlier six month threaten forewarning noted.

A 35-year-old Black man, Fred Rochelle, killed Mrs. Rena Taggart in Bartow, Florida, then was burned at the stake by a crowd at the crime scene. The mob, numbering about, gathered near Place Creek bridge as authorities attempted to protect him, and kerosene was poured on him before a match was struck. The event drew widespread attention and ended with the burning in the swamp area near the bridge, with city life largely halted.
