The Alabama Democratic Party nominated Hon. William C. Oates for governor after a close primary battle with Captain Joseph T. Johnston. Johnston urged unity against the common enemy and both candidates claimed strong support from their camps. Delegates faced procedural splits, with officials seating Oates delegates in Lee and Johnston in Hale counties amid a harmonizing call from party leaders.
In Forest City Arkansas a clash over winecaps led to a bloody fight. Detective Webber from Memphis was killed along with another man, Deputy Smith wounded, and Frank German of Palestine under arrest as mobs attacked officers. The town remains volatile with possible further trouble.
Hamblen county Sheriff Magee was accidentally shot on his Morristown porch when his revolver discharged while he struck at a dog. The ball passed through his stomach and he is not expected to survive. The incident occurred May 22 in Knoxville Tennessee.
