Memphis May 21 620 delegates will attend the southern sound money convention opening Thursday. All states and major southern cities are represented. Fredericksburg Va May 21 Charles C Bearcey the Aquila creek train robber was moved from jail to the Richmond penitentiary to begin his eight year sentence.
The North Carolina Democratic executive committee met in Raleigh, voting 2 to 1 to reaffirm support for free coinage of silver at 16 to 1 and immediate resumption without foreign cooperation. They urge national unity with Illinois on the issue, protest the Memphis convention’s influence, and call for candidates who back financial emancipation from gold. Governor Carr attends Greensboro commencement to award diplomas. U S Labor Commissioner Wright speaks with NC officials in attendance.
At a Memphis meeting of the Central Rim mlists Tangur an organization of coin men urged a bimetallic education convention in Memphis on June 6 7 and 8 with many national speakers including Darel Surple Reagan Walthall and others to address the silver cause while Bryan is set to speak Friday evening in the Oran Opera house. Delegates to state conventions were chosen in Lewiston and Toluaboro with pledges for free silver and opposition to single gold or silver monometallism.
Berlin May 21 The bimetallic measure that cleared the upper house was approved in the lower house by a large majority. An amendment seeking to omit the phrase about securing international bimetallism was defeated 187 to 82.
In Chicago on May 21 stockholders adopted resolutions for a judicial sale of trust property and a separate sale outside court to avoid upholding a lower court ruling that declared the trust illegal under Illinois law. The move presages possible incorporation of Diptilling and Cattle Feeding Company in another state. La Gascogne overdue again.
Houston hosts the fifth annual United Confederate Veterans reunion with veterans from every state, leaders of the lost cause, and federal and Confederate banners mingling in a grand parade. Tens of thousands attend as registration badges reach 7,900 and Galveston and Camp Culberson events unfold amid speeches by General Gordon and Governor Culberson.
In Houston on May 21 special dispatch reports Miss Winnie Davis arriving with the Richmond delegation and General Gordon. A large crowd greeted her at the train while hotels are full and veterans seek lodging amid famed Texan hospitality likely to house all by tomorrow night. The Atlanta delegation also arrived tonight.
May 24 Saratoga Captain William Mitchell United States Army retired fell at the Casino while trying to ride a bicycle. Nashville Chief of Police reports received a letter from Julia Gordon first wife of 3 B Gordon now jailed on forgery charges. The missive dated Summerville Ga May 10 asks for details of other charges and hints at wounded feelings over marriage and hopes of justice.
In Burlington railroad yards at Charlton on May 21 a clash broke out as officers tried to arrest tramps breaking into a car. Revolvers fired, bullets exchanged. Constable Baglan was struck in the left breast and is believed fatally wounded, while Marshal Hixson suffered a minor shoulder injury. It was unclear if any tramps were shot as they fled with their companions.
The Florida house passed the anti prize fight bill unanimously after Senate approval. Violation carries a 3600 dollar fine or up to five years in prison. Sheriffs may enter premises to halt contests and arrest suspected violators. Governor Mitchell expected to sign. Also note: Ohio grape crop ruined by a 2 degree drop along the lake shore.
In Macon on May 21 Deputy U S Marshals arrested John M Williams and Stephen Williams after Lucius L Williams was shot during the confrontation at the front porch. Deputies report a Winchester exchange with Williams and his son, with multiple shots fired. Lucius Williams was wounded and his recovery doubtful. Sheriff Alligood and local officials accompanied the deputies, and habeas corpus proceedings were set for Friday before Judge Speer.
