Watermelon crop in Georgia shows marked decline this year
Albany May 18 Special The watermelon and cantaloupe crops are greatly reduced in South Georgia. Acreage is at least 50 percent lower than last year due to storms and poor vine conditions. Growers expect lower volumes, with prices likely rising, while cantaloupes and watermelons face delayed replanting and extended recovery.

Watermelon shortage hits rural Georgia farmers
Obstacles of scarce land near rail lines and deteriorating soil push growers like Barmera to abandon watermelons and switch to cantaloupes or other crops. A prominent Douwherty county grower laments limited fertile plots and notes he planted cantaloupes only due to lack of suitable land for watermelons. The trend, echoed by several farms, leaves fields idle as land near rail corridors remains unplanted, threatening local watermelon supply for the season.

Georgia cane crop profits rise with growing acreage
Columbus May 18 Special It is the estimate of the Williams Manufacturing Company that the Georgia cane crop will show about 5 percent greater production this year than last. Cane acreage is increasing in middle and southwest Georgia and around Columbus Alabama and Florida. The firm notes refiners pay higher prices for refined sirup and expect continued profits as Georgia sirup prices rise from fifteen to thirty two and a half cents per gallon. President Williams urges farmers to expand cane planting and reserve seed for next season. He expects sugar refineries to come to Georgia, with refining sirup remaining more profitable in the near term.
