Washington May 15 Special The Atlanta exposition committee pleaded for a government exhibit in the Cotton States and International exposition to be held in Atlanta next year asking for 200000 for a government building and 200000 for exhibit expenses. Georgia’s delegation and Southern leaders urged broad national backing as Bishop Gaines Tolkin and Bishop Grant spoke for the colored exhibit. The committee forecast favorable recognition and planned further lobbying with Secretary Hoke Smith hosting a reception.

Maddox Secures Cadet for District in Navy Bill
Washington May 11 Special Judge Maddox won his fight for a naval cadet from his district by an amendment to the naval appropriation bill. The measure provides a cadet for every district not represented at present and, in future, when a congressman fails to appoint, the secretary of the navy shall fill the vacancy from that district. The goa l follows a long effort by Maddox and others. Major Black opposed several naval appropriations and succeeded in striking a $200,000 torpedo boat item as unnecessary. Speaker Crisp learned of Mrs. Burton’s death in Evanville and stayed home. W B Tate and Carter Tate left for New York for a medical course.

At Churchill Downs in Louisville on Derby day 1900, Chant captured the twentieth Kentucky Derby in front of about 15,000 spectators. Pearl Song led early, with Sigurd close behind.
