Mayor Woodward grants a permit for a major dance at Five Points with six bands drawing visitors by the thousands. Street cars run all night to serve the crowds and transport SHriners and visitors into the city today.
C F Wilkinson president of the Atlanta Association of Building Owners and Managers informs Potentate Forrest Adair that all downtown Atlanta office buildings will be illuminated in every room until 11 p m Monday Tuesday and Wednesday nights He says letters were sent and most members responded affirmatively with the rest expected to comply willingly.
Shrine week begins with thousands arriving in Atlanta as street crowds swell city streets. All-night trolley service is to run on main lines. a Five Points al fresco ballroom opens with dancing from 1 30 until 3 a.m. Police and cleanup crews prepare for massive nightly crowds while California delegates arrive by special train.
Montgomery May 9. One of the most bitterly contested state campaigns ended with candidates and speakers in heated debates. The forthcoming Monday primary will nominate a governor and other state officers. Former Gov Comer and Charles Henderson vie for governor, with local option and prohibition issues prominent. Captain KR Kolb and Lt. Gov. Walter B. Seed, both eliminated in April, supported Henderson and Comer respectively. Captain Frank S. White seeks the short term Senate seat from Ray Rustiton, winning the April nomination for the unexpired term of Senator Jermston next March.
Washington reports the first major Mexican crisis memorandum seeks 2 782 million dollars for pay subsistence supplies homes barracks transportation and engineering for troops at Vera Cruz and on the border. The largest item 1 498 074 covers troop movement transports coal water and stevedoring for chartered vessels. Washington May One provision of the administration anti trust pill could add an indirect tax of 40 million dollars a year, said E W Shaw editor of a business magazine before the senate interstate commerce committee. Shaw, for the Chicago Association of Commerce, argued annual reports from interstate firms would cost that much. Chairman Newlands said reports would be discretionary not compulsory. Senator Lippitt deemed Shaw's estimate far too low.
The United States barred German arms to Huerta and halted delivery of two munitions cargoes shipped aboard German vessels to Puerto Mexico. Mediation talks proceed at Niagara Falls with Huerta delegates leaving Mexico City. Reinforcements for General Funston at Veracruz are planned, twelve transports prepared, while German vessels Kronprinzessin Cecilie and Barbary would return armaments to Germany. Delegates Lamar and Lehmann named as possible participants. discussions continue with Secretary Bryan and Garrison. The three South American mediators prepare to depart Washington for Niagara Falls.
Georgia Democratic leaders warn a deadlocked convention could empower railway interests and Tom Watson to reshape the governor and U S Senate selection. Chairman Harris urges a second primary or rule change to prevent railroads from controlling the state convention and to safeguard the county unit system amid lease deals worth 20 million dollars.
