In Louisville May 8 the Gordon murder trial moved with a subpoena for Webster Gaselay of the Louisville Water Company who shadowed Mrs Gordon and Archie Brown to Lucy Smiths house. Gaselay was cleared but sought to testify as details of the tragedy emerged with Pardee Mitchell and Lucy Smith recounting arrivals and Brown's letters to Mrs Gordon, including a full missive noting plans and future meetings.
A letter excerpt signed Tye is read as General Wallace testifies about a tall white man escorting Gordon to the Smith house the day of the tragedy. The commonwealth rests and defense moves to discharge. Judge Thompson adjourns until 11 to hear arguments. Gordon then faints in court.

In Chattanooga on May 8, Colonel H Clay Evans and Newell Sanders entertained Republican and allied lawmakers who opposed seating Governor Turney and shunned inauguration committees. At Lookout Mountain they dined, as Senator McCarron toasted loyalty to Evans and reform efforts. Evans praised his past charges, asserted frauds were proven, and vowed renewed effort against Tennessee’s Democratic machine in future elections.
Reports say a major New York trust company and a Philadelphia firm will back N and W reorganization. A new 6½ percent mortgage will refinance existing bonds and a 4 percent mortgage will cover underlying bonds and floating debt, dropping Lynchburg and Durham and Roanoke and Southern guarantees. Fixed charges drop to about 2.3 million while net earnings reach 2.2 million, leaving a surplus for improvements and dividends. Track, bridges, and rolling stock are in good condition. coal marketing stoppage and rate increases noted. receivers have spent cash on detriments. Last four months earnings exceed prior year by 127,000.

New York Mey &8-A contract with Newport News Shipbuilding to build a vessel for Plant Steamship Line. The ship, over 400 feet long and costing about $600,000, will be among the largest built in American yards, second only to the St Louis and St Paul of the American line. Henry B. Plant’s office confirmed the contract but he was ill and could not comment. Work will begin immediately.
Rome May 8 The royal decree dissolving the current parliament sets May 26 for deputy elections and June 4 for the new chamber's opening. A ministry report cites agitation as grounds for dissolution and notes the electoral lists law as a cause. The government expects the country to unite behind national interests.
Providence May 8 Indications show the first break in the Olneyville strike as Menton mill weavers plan to return after the Manufacturers' Club notice is removed. About 600 workers would be idle if the force stands down, following the weavers' mass exodus and the dresser tenders being forced out.
In Denver California Richard Demady was tried for the alleged strangler case. The jury retired after reviewing exhibits sent to the jury room and returned a verdict of not guilty at 8 o'clock this evening.

Julius Doden of Savannah Ga discharged after completing Pasteur Institute hydrophobia inoculation course and will return home.
Ex Mayor Grant and his bride departed New York for Europe aboard the White Star liner Teutonic. They plan a five week abroad stay mainly in Paris and Italy, with Paris and Italy as primary destinations.
London dispatches say Maceo commands about 6 000 troops in the province with 14 000 cartridges and captured rifles. Gomez and Marti joined him after landing near Maysi, planning strategic moves toward Puerto Principe while avoiding major Spanish lines. The insurgents report better prospects and expect to extend operations with supplies of food and equipment improving in the field.
