In Chattanooga Tennessee May 4 special primaries were held in all precincts to nominate candidates for county offices. Key contests arose for sheriff county judge and county court clerk. The tomorrow convention will name Hugh Whiteside for county judge Bob Cooke for clerk B J Sharp R L Craig Robert Henderson and H T Rogers for trustee circuit clerk and register. Sharp is expected to win shrievalty while Whiteside leads over J W Clift for judge. Heavy voting occurred with no major disturbances. Concurrently in Cleveland Ohio May 4 work resumed on public improvements as shops reopen with police ready to arrest any rioting and workers massing at the central station.
Washington May 4 The judiciary subcommittee released its report on the injunction against Northern Pacific employees striking and whether Judge Jenkins exceeded his authority. It deems the order a gross abuse of judicial power void and notes workers had a right to withdraw or unite for better terms. It recommends a prohibitory statute to prevent such orders and curbs on contempt powers. Senator Vest later reported committee amendments to the income tax proposing a 2 percent levy on net profits of many entities with penalties for noncompliance.
