Discount for imports from American ships granted by board
New York March 6. The board of United States general appraisers ruled a 5 percent discount on duties for imports carried in ships of American registry. Judge B S Waite wrote the opinion, saying the discount furthers congressional intent and does not violate treaties. The ruling affects four American Line ships from Southampton to New York, two Red Star Line ships, and other coastwise American-registered vessels. The decision, if upheld, ends the treaty concerns raised by Attorney General McReynolds and port authorities.
