Vicious assault on Capitol Avenue man ends in injury

Gerfon B Massengale was struck from behind as he walked home near Capitol avenue about 11 pm. The blow caused a deep scalp wound and a forehead bruise as he fell onto the sidewalk. Police investigated but could not identify the assailant, noting a club or heavy stone was used. Massengale, a bookkeeper for Simpson & Harper, remains hospitalized at home for several days with nonfatal injuries.

Dr Wiliam Oliphant Murder Near Helm Station

Report notes the death of Dr Oliphant at Helm Station in Washington county by a half crazy negro. The train brought the suspect, captured by masked men, who allegedly hanged him before reaching Elizabeth station. Victim was shot with buckshot, flesh torn, after escape from custody days earlier.
