London Suffragettes Riot Smashes Windows Across City
A large suffragette action in London saw half a dozen government office windows smashed and a woman chained to a tree in Whitehall. Police uprooted the tree to free her as fear spread through the capital. Shops shut early and streets bore evidence of the disruption with barricades and boarded storefronts. A mounted officer was dragged from his horse and damage in one store reached 1260 dollars. Dozens were arrested as suffragettes targeted Knightsbridge Brompton Road and the Royal Academy exposure was cut short for security concerns.
