Witnesses before a Congress committee describe child labor in Lawrence mills. Girls and boys faced brutal conditions, long shifts for meager pay, and poor treatment by soldiers guarding the plants. Some children were reportedly beaten and left hungry in the mills.
In Lawrence Massachusetts a crowd of over 2000 gathered after a mass meeting, clashing with police before dispersing. Meanwhile 14 and 15 year old mill workers testified in Washington before the Rules Committee about brutal conditions, low pay, and forced water charges.

The body was buried at the Chapel Hill Confederate lot amid a snowstorm after a campus collection. Benton died by his own hand at the Soldiers' Home in Raleigh and left his body to the university for dissection.
